NATTUKOOTTAM is the folk wing of Increation. For the last 6 years, the team has been involved in collecting and documenting folk songs and performances in and around the south Indian state of Kerala. It is the continuation of Inheritage’s effort to preserve ethnic music, lore and tastes.
Till date, the team has collected nearly 100 folk songs and revived performances that were lost in the march of time. There were no reference for these songs and performances any of the recorded archives. The team members trekked remote villages of Kerala, interacted with old-timers and learnt the art. Now, they are helping others to learn it and perform it widely. So far, Nattukoottam has staged 1000-odd shows.
The programmes, duration of which could be between 90 minutes to 150 minutes, showcase the essence of rural Indian life, in all its vibrancy and profusion of colours. Shows could be single-member demonstration or team performances featuring 3, 11, 15 or full 20 members. The full quorum of 20 members consists of 6 percussionists, 6 singers and 6 accompanying artistes. A full show will have 15 performances and 25 songs.
For overseas performances, the team comes on stage with proper introduction to the subtleties of cultural shades. Nattukoottam is highlighting the solo demonstration by Janardhanan Puthuserry as a cultural exchange platform. During his 120-minute demonstration, he would explain and introduce as much as 18 ethnic instruments. There will be songs to demonstrate the use of each of these instruments.
